Why do humans struggle with past traumatic experiences?

Although animals in the wild constantly deal with danger, they do not appear to experience trauma the same way as we do. The difference is they do not have a thinking brain (prefrontal cortex). They never hear, “Stop it! Pull yourself together! It wasn’t that bad.” They are able to metabolize the experience and return to grazing with the other animals. Many humans who have been traumatized do not have this ability.

Impact Our Ability

The lasting effects of trauma impact our ability to form and maintain healthy relationships. We may struggle with trust issues, difficulty in expressing emotions, or engaging in patterns of aggression or defensiveness.

Feel trapped

Many individuals feel trapped and desire a path toward healing, inner peace, and a renewed sense of purpose. The lack of understanding and effective tools to address trauma leaves them searching for support and guidance to navigate their journey toward recovery

Symptoms of Past Trauma

  • Intrusive Thoughts or Memories: Recurrent and distressing thoughts, memories, or nightmares about the traumatic event.
  • Avoidance Behavior: Avoiding reminders, situations, or activities that may trigger memories or emotions associated with the trauma.
  • Relationship Difficulties: Struggling with trust, intimacy, and forming or maintaining healthy relationships due to the impact of past trauma.
  • Hyperarousal: Being in a constant state of heightened alertness, feeling on edge, and being easily startled or irritable.
  • Emotional Distress: Experiencing intense and overwhelming emotions such as anxiety, fear, anger, sadness, or guilt.
  • Negative Self-Perception: Feeling guilty, ashamed, or blaming oneself for the traumatic event, leading to low self-esteem and self-worth.
  • Physical Symptoms: Physical manifestations of trauma, including headaches, gastrointestinal issues, sleep disturbances, and fatigue.

  • Emotional Numbing: Feeling emotionally detached, numb, or experiencing a sense of disconnection from oneself or others.

  • Hypervigilance: Constantly being on guard, scanning the environment for potential threats or danger.

  • Flashbacks: Reliving the traumatic event through vivid and distressing memories, often accompanied by physical sensations.

Types of Trauma Therapy

There are many different types of trauma therapy, each with its own unique approach. Some common types include:

  • Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy (CBT): This therapy helps people identify and challenge negative thought patterns that may be contributing to their symptoms.
  • Exposure Therapy: This therapy involves gradually exposing oneself to triggers in a safe and controlled environment.
  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR): This therapy uses rapid eye movements to help people process traumatic memories.
  • Mindfulness-Based Therapies: These therapies teach people to be present in the moment and to accept their thoughts and feelings without judgment.
