Relationships are our greatest source of joy and pain.

Humans are relational and sensual beings. We all have basic needs for love, affection, and sexual intimacy. Fulfilling these needs in healthy, satisfying, and appropriate ways is crucial for overall health and well-being.

Relationships are our greatest source of joy and pain. Long-standing relationships, starting a new relationship, getting married, ending a relationship or marriage, or pursuing a relationship can bring up our most profound insecurities. These insecurities can be rooted in unresolved childhood trauma, attachments to caregivers, or past relationships that didn’t work out according to plan.

Sometimes these differences mesh well

When two people come together, they bring their own unique sets of values, needs, ways of communicating, parenting styles, and sexual preferences. As well as relationships with friends and extended families.

Sometimes these differences mesh well, and sometimes they create dysfunction. At illuminated Path Therapy and Coaching Center, we provide individual therapy as well as couples therapy for relationship concerns. We use evidence-based methods such as Gottman Method, Emotion Focussed Therapy( EFT), and Imago Relationship Therapy to strengthen the quality of relationships.

Premarital Therapy

Premarital counseling is a type of psychotherapy that helps couples prepare for marriage. Premarital counseling can help you and your partner create a strong and healthy foundation for your partnership. Our goal is to increase your chances for a stable and fulfilling marriage.

Too many couples start marriage thinking they can just figure it out on their own and are shocked at how hard things feel after the honeymoon. You don’t have to wait until you’re in a place of hopelessness to address emerging patterns.

Many problems that arise in a marriage are preventable by learning some basic strategies and tools for making a marriage work from the beginning. Couples who do premarital counseling have a 30% lower divorce rate than those who don’t.

Premarital therapy focuses on enhancing the relationship’s positive qualities and identifying and resolving potential areas of concern before they become patterns that are difficult to change.

Premarital therapy involves assessments, education, and guidance to prepare you for a lasting and happy marriage.

Topics Discussed In Premarital Therapy:

  • The latest research on what makes a marriage work
  • Your vision for the future

  • Toxic behaviors to avoid

Phase 1: Assessment

Get an in-depth relationship assessment to learn your relationship strengths and growth areas. This includes intake interviews, questionnaires, oral histories, and individual sessions. We will explore the history of this relationship, what brought you together, and what has led to distance and dissatisfaction over time.

Phase 2: Skill Building

Learn effective communication skills needed to create a more positive relationship environment.  This will include learning about reactivity in difficult conversations, avoiding “attack-defend” cycles, and learning tools to increase your ability to resolve conflict by removing barriers that create a feeling of stagnancy in conflicting situations. We will also explore ways to de-escalate high-intensity conflict.

Phase  3: Deeper Exploration and Repair

As we look deeper into the relationship dynamics, we will identify unconscious patterns from childhood that are impacting your relationship and change unwanted patterns. This includes understanding why you keep having the same fights repeatedly and how they become grid-locked conflicts. You will learn how to effectively have dialogues about these conflicts to create a heightened sense of empathy and understanding within the context of the relationship. We will also help you process inevitable miscommunications and help you repair damages to your relationship. Along the way, we will focus on healing wounds and building trust. You will also learn how to express your needs and set healthy boundaries within your relationship and those with extended family, friends, and work.

Phase 4: Increase Intimacy

Learn techniques to increase intimacy, passion, affection, and a satisfying sex life. This includes how to initiate, talk about and enjoy sex. We also work to restore your sense of adventure, fun, humor, play, and fun. We will help you build a system of shared meaning and honor one another’s life dreams. You will develop rituals of connection, both formal and informal.

Phase 5: Maintaining Patterns

Practicing and maintaining new patterns of relating. Learn to look for signs of reverting to old patterns. Change is not always a straight line, and setbacks are a part of learning anything. In this stage, we work on practicing the techniques you’ve learned and implementing them in your daily lives to maintain a healthy, happy long-term relationship.

Divorce Support and Therapy

Divorce is a life-altering experience that can cause significant distress. Each person’s divorce experience and the struggles accompanying it are unique. You might have a rollercoaster of emotions that range from anger, fear, and depression to shame, loss of confidence, and profound grief.

You may be experiencing not only a loss of your marriage but also the loss of your identity, the loss of your family unit, traditions, rituals, and holidays you had, and the loss of the future you imagined and planned. Having to split finances and time with your children, overcoming legal obstacles, and learning how to co-parent, are some of the hardest things to come to terms with.

At Illuminated Path Therapy and Coaching Center, we specialize in offering highly personalized divorce therapy in a supportive and confidential environment. Whether your marriage is ending as a result of infidelity, abuse, trust issues, lack of intimacy, fundamental incompatibility, or all the above, we can help provide the support you need to process your emotions, arrive at a place of acceptance, and eventually move forward towards the possibility of a happier future.
