Depression is a mood disorder that causes a persistent feeling of sadness and loss of interest. Also called major depressive disorder or clinical depression, it affects how you feel, think and behave and can lead to a variety of emotional and physical problems. You may have trouble doing normal day-to-day activities, and sometimes you may feel as if life isn’t worth living.
There are different types of depression, including major depressive disorder (characterized by one or more major depressive episodes) and persistent depressive disorder (long-term feelings of sadness that do not quite meet the clinical criteria for major depressive episodes). Individuals suffering from depression often also experience challenges related to self-esteem and self-worth.
Depression can strain relationships with family, friends, and romantic partners. It may be challenging to maintain meaningful connections and engage in social activities due to a lack of interest or energy. Withdrawal from loved ones can lead to feelings of isolation and loneliness.
Depression often leads to negative thinking patterns, self-criticism, and feelings of worthlessness or guilt. Individuals may have a distorted perception of themselves and struggle with low self-esteem. This negative self-perception can further perpetuate the cycle of depression and make it difficult to engage in self-care or pursue personal goals.
